Delicious Monster in the News

Delicious Monster at Zoka

We're back from a great week at Macworld Expo. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth! We're really happy that we've been able to let even more people know about Delicious Library and we're super excited about what we're working on for this year.

Delicious Monster was featured in the Seattle PI yesterday. It's a good insight into what we're about, what we've been been up to lately, and where we're going next.

Great article!
Any date for the 2.0 release ?
I just wonder if I can buy DL NOW, or if I should wait for the 2.0 version...

A few comments...
* Nice positive press in the article. I hope you can use all the profits mentioned to provide some nice free updates to those of us that took DM to where you are today.
* Good to hear about SQL underpinnings in the next version. DL feels slow on my PB G4 867MHz with only a couple hundred items in the library.
* Publish to web is a good idea. Here's a different idea for you - Instead of linking to DM's Amazon.com affiliate account, allow users to insert their own affiliate account so the user can get "credit" for inspiring someone to purchase the item based on their comments, review, etc.
* Please don't forget some more options for printing as well.
* Interesting ideas with the social networking features. I look forward to seeing more. I think the concept of tags from sites like Flickr.com would translate well to tagging movies and books.
* I'd still like to see more "pro" cataloging features such as those in DVD Profiler to get more detailed info on movies (and books, too). If you build a social networking site, leverage that community to build those details into a shared catalog. Use peer review to continully improve the accuracy of the catalog.
* I'd really like a "wishlist" feature to track movies and books that I'd like to get sometime.
* Please get "smartshelves" out there for us.

I'm not sure if there's an online database that you guys to take advantage us for comic books, but I would love to see that feature in the next release. There just isn't any good software for the Mac when it comes to organizing a comic book collection and that would be a great feature.

I second clave's statement. I've been hoping and waiting for a decent comic book cataloging app for OSX. I think the fine folks at Delicious Monster would be perfect for the job. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will either be incorporated into DL or they will release a second app that is capable of cataloging comic books.

I'll third what clave said. I would absolutely LOVE a feature to catalog comics.

Also, how about a feature that would link DL to iTunes or a movie program that would allow us to launch albums or movies straight through DL. That would make DL a great little home theater app.

I have been using DM for about 6 months and it is fantastic! Love the software, would be great to add some extra features:
1. Link to other more obscure databases (other than Amazon) - such as Christian Music Databases. Some of the music is not featured in Amazon
2. Could you integrate or link with Itunes, not to just link with the items you have bought, but the option of double clicking on the CD (already ripped to Itunes) and have iTunes open up and play the CD! How about that!

Thanks

Echoing what Danny said, it sounds like we want plugins. And DL 2.0, that would be nice too.

I'd really like .Mac sync for Delicious Library. I have DL on my iMac, but it would be great to be able to have a copy of the library on my Powerbook as well, so that when I'm travelling I know what books I have...

It's been months since we've been told there would be great things ahead for DL. This was just after programmers started getting hired away. Is this true? When can we expect updates? I haven't even gotten responses for bugs I reported when I first bought the software a week after I got my Mini, last June. I'm really disappointed at how slow this is going, and the lack of response.

Oh, and will you be adding a feature whereby I can import a friend's library and compare it to my own, without having to merge the two? I talked him into buying a copy, also, and he's also disgusted his bug reports have also been ignored.

Wil, Drew, and other DL folks:

I suggest that for Books, editors be included in the author list with "(ed.)" appended to their names. This should be a trivial fix that you can implement even in a minor point release PRIOR to 2.0, but should DEFINITELY be part of the 2.0 featureset.

Right now, DL is not downloading editor names at all, which is a major problem. DL 1.1 would put editors in the author list as if they were authors (no "ed." appended to their names). DL 1.5.3 doesn't download editor names at all, however, which is a huge problem for certain books like textbooks or journal compilations where there are no listed authors and ONLY listed editors.

It would be really great if DL followed the normal conventions of creator listing, namely listing actual authors first (if any) and then listing editors (if any) with "(ed.)" appended to their names. This convention would properly list creators in ALL cases.

Alternatively, include an "editors" field alongside the "creators" field... but I think that option would be bulky and redundant, whereas properly including editors in the creators list, after actual authors and with "(ed.)" after their names would be the proper way to do it.

Thanks!!

This is a really cool little program. I have had so much fun with it, and it does way more for me than I thought it would. And the integration is awesome, I really like that I can carry all that information on my iPod. As I said, great job, just to leave a little positive feedback.

I've got to agree... I was very excited about Delicious Library (and Delicious Monster) back in the day, but the only news I've been hearing for a year is "great things are on the way!" In the meantime, lots of issues remain unadressed.

If 2.0 is a paid update and we don't get any bug fixes for the current version, I think I'll wait for some competing products.

Regarding Comic books, there is a free database for covers! http://www.comics.org/

Tap into that and allow for the unique categories comics bring with it (TPBs, HCs, mini-series, maxi-series, ongoings, etc.) and I'll be buying the new version right away!

There is a huge comic book fan community willing to help with development in any way. I hope this idea is pursued!

I would really love to see a feature where you could share your library over the network. In our small office i would be much nicer sharing one library all across rather than having to export it and import it on every desktop, when updates are beeing made. Anyway great software! Keep up the good work…

I would love to see other sources of information rather than just Amazon. Borders, B&I, Library of Congress ... the possibilities are endless.

As a lifelong bibliophile, I can tell you that this program is absolutely wonderful; the ability to use the iSight takes it over the top.

Thanks for a great program! I use it to sroe info on my 3000+ volume library, and enjoy peace of mind knowing, at last, where all my stuff is.

I'm looking for a way to export the library data into a form that can be read by EndNote. Th text export is just an undifferentiated mass of text that makes it difficult to filter out matters other than the basic publisher data.

Thanks!

Well, now that Drew is gone and Delicious Monster doesn't even seem to update their blog anymore, I suppose I'm not the only one who suspects they're dead in the water. I hope someone buys up Delicious Library and continues work on it, it has a lot of promise.

I bought DL when it first came out. I found it inovative and useful. My main use for it would be for cataloging my comic collection. This would be amazing to have in a program as simple as DL. I'd even buy it again to have this feature. Great work! Thanks.

Hi, I love the software. I was thinking about a feature today ,delicious Library will be kick ass if add. how about mail integration . I mean when you have a movie checked out by a friend and you want an email mailed automatically to him/her reminding them to return it. Is this possible?
thanks for the wonderful software again.

I agree with some previous commenters that comic book cataloging would be perfect. I haven't bought DL yet because I'm waiting to see if this happens.

Hi have you ever thought about making an export function or maybe a standalone application that makes osx icons like the the cd jewel cases and dvd cases you have in delicious monster. I would love to have my music folders as icons so that they are easier to spot when browsing the finder, plus it would just look really cool.

Repeating fabien's question

Is there any kind of general estimate on when to expect the release of version 2.0?

Like this summer, this fall, before the end of the year, 2007? Just wondering.

A BIT ANNOYED: I'm a newbie that just purchased the product to store my 600+ collection of Music CD's and I was a bit annoyed to learn that there's no options for definithing whith fields get listed when you attempt to print the collection. Currently I can sort by location (which I use as a 'slot number' in my CaseLogic cd holder) but when I print the report it has the album title but no creator...

I'd love it if someone can come up with an idea to get around this...

would be nice if you could re-arrange the shelves by dragging them. also, someone else mentioned "smartshelves" and i think this would be awesome too. finally--i'm a bit peeved that we have to purchase another license in order to get the bluetooth scanner. for something that you want to sell, it's making it harder for the customer to buy it! i mean--why do that to us? i want to get the scanner, but i sure as hell don't want to go through the trouble of buying another license and then getting refunded for it!!!
