Got Big Questions? Ask 'em!

Wil Shipley, the co-founder of and programmer for Delicious Monster, will be interview by Cocoa Radio soon, and if you want to ask a big question, here's your chance to hear the answer instead of, say, reading it, which is what you'd get if you sent us mail.
Note that we probably won't be answering support questions on the show, so if your question is, like, "Hey, will you guys allow me to catalog the contents of my fridge soon?" we might not get to it. Sorry.

i think the big question everyone wants to know is when is Delicious Library gonna become a standard install with Apple's backing it obviously fits well with there digital lifestyle software etc.
When are you going to allow scriptability and automation support to DL?
When are you going to add support for non-Amazon databases? Or plugins, for that matter? I could add my own governmental funded local ISBN database this way
I've been really enjoying Delicious Library and hyping it to all my friends but the entire time I've been craving one specific feature: the ability to export the library to a web page (similar to that feature in iPhoto) would be a great addition. Are there any plans to implement such a feature in the future or is it possible to design a plugin for DL that would accomplish this? (I'm not even sure if a plug-n system exists in the application). Regardless, keep up the great work and thanks for designing a unique and endlessly useful piece of software!
i thought this was already possible via :-
http://www.mikematas.com/2004/11/delicious-library-web-export-program.html
however its not a BUILT-IN FEATURE... that would be a great addition. One button that when pressed exports the file and packages it in HTML so you just FTP the page to your site.
I still would like to see the ability to get a total value for all items in the database. I use it primarily for insurance purposes, and it would suck to have to go in and add up all of the books, movies, music, etc. by hand. I would think it would be a simple addition to the program.
thats a GREAT idea !
Dunno whether it should be NEW for OLD value or 2nd Hand value.... that creates an issue because 2nd hand values can vary so much depending on Age, Condition, Use, etc etc... but it would be a COOL addition for sure !
This is Drew from Delicious Monster. When Wil calls for questions, he is not necessarily talking about questions as to what we're doing in the future, but we appreciate the feedback of course.
To formally file things like these, please use the "Send Bugs & Feedback" feature in the Help menu of Delicious Library to make sure your voice is heard. We track all feature suggestions closely by popularity - thanks again for all your feedback.
I can see how this would be a great addition for those of us like myself that collect comic books. Do you think it would be possible to catalog comic books like normal books without having to do it individually by hand?
Ok, so I downloaded the app & it looks great -- but I opened it with the sample library & now can't try scanning one of my own books because of the 25 limit.
How do I close the sample library & re-open without it?
What's your favorite feature in an upcoming release of DL?
This is Drew from Delicious Monster.
Treehouse, to start over from the sample library, remove all of your items (in all of Books, Movies, Music and Games) and also remove any custom shelves. Then you'll be back with an empty library.
Pat, all of them. ;) ;)
My request for a feature is Group Editing: the ability to select multiple entries and code one or two fields, like Creator or Genres, with the same text. I do this in iTunes all the time; select several songs and code them as Jazz, etc.
Without this feature, getting the database to be even mildly uniform is a pain, because the data downloaded from Amazon is so inconsistent, especially when it comes to designations of genre or even publisher's names.
Will, this is Drew from Delicious Monster.
This is actually already possible. Just select multiple items and then edit whatever field you would like. It will be assigned to all of the selected items.
I would love to use Delicious Library as a launcher for my ripped movies. I've invested a lot of time and energy into ripping my movies and using my iMac mini as a media center driven by Library! I would love to double-click on a movie in Library and have it open the movie using VLC or QuickTime Player. Integration with CenterStage(http://centerstageproject.com/) and Front Row (http://www.apple.com/imac/frontrow.html) would be awesome as well! Any plans for this in 2.0? What's in store for 2.0, anyway?
Drew, thanks for the tip on group editing. I read through the Help file and didn't find that info. If it's missing, would definitely appreciate inclusion.
I'd like to be able to download entries from the Library of Congress public catalog. Especially useful for older books that pre-cate the UPC and ISBN schemes.
Has anyone tried to import data from EndNote? DL requires a tab-delimited file, which is no problem, but will it map the fields, or do I have to set them up to match DL exactly?
I read that back in November 2004 that you had a working HTML export for library that you were planning to release. A year later this feature remains very much in demand but is still not implemented. Have you stopped development on the product? Does it take a year to integrate a simple xml parser? Of course it doesn't. That would be absurd.
I've just discoverd this promising app, and I'm very tempted to buy it. However, I'm reluctant because a fairly stagnant feature set seems to suggest that the application has lost its developmental momentum. I don't want to buy a promising application just to see it abandoned...
It seems like a large number of Delicious Monster employees have been relocating to Cupertino recently. My question to Wil is this: has he ever been asked to join the collective at Infinite Loop, and if so, what balanced his decision to carry on as a n indy developer?
Also - does he have any tips for developers as to building a good working relationship with Apple? Is a Select membership to the ADC enough?
Is it possible to automate serches on other web sites (similar to what can be done with Amazon)? I am organizing comics so a site like comicpriceguide.com would be very helpful.

Guys, great software, a friend told me about it, I bought it and now four more friends have too - easy to sell! It's getting a little slow now I have over a thousand entries in it, but goes on working. What I really need is a way of printing out the details on standard paper or preferably DVD cover paper so that my whole library can look neat on the shelf. All the data's there, surely this couldn't be hard for someone cleverer for me? Pretty please?! Rob
The Question I have is ...you can't do anything with this program.except look at it....why not an interface with the 500 disc Sony DVD player......PLEASE
I know that a common request is for D.L. to be able to export to a web page. That would be nice.
I would also like to see better administration features vis a vis Amazon Marketplace. It would be lovely to be able to have more than one copy listed, as well as the ability to manage sales (Amazon.com requires that you ship within two days, so if you go away for several days or more, you have to close your listings ... and then repost them.). I know that I can export to a database program and manage from there, but that's a whole 'nother layer of work. Are there any plans to make the Amazon marriage even more useful?
Two quick requests:
1) I'd like to see the ISBN # listed separately
2) when printing/exporting, it would be handy to be able to pick n' choose items. For example, I would like to be able to just choose to have the title, author, publisher, and ISBN rather than the whole whack o' stuff (blurb, price, etc, etc, etc.).
2a) as a bonus, it would be handy to have a choice of tab or break delimited text output...
Can the CD itself be scanned without the case or pamphlet. I have thrown away about 600 of them to save storage space.
ok, I have a comment, well, 2
Is there going to be a real forum for this software?
the real question:
how does one go about using this scanner for more than just Delicious Library?
Allen,
You can check out our forum at http://forums.macnn.com/delicious-monster/.
We wrote custom software support for the scanner, but I think you may be able to find a generalized driver from Serialio.
