Version number MADNESS.
Mike has decided he wants to call the version we're releasing on Monday "1.1" instead of "1.0.7", because we've made some big changes and we seriously want everyone to upgrade. I said, "But I told everyone that 1.1 would have international support!" and he said, "Well, just post in the blog that we renamed the versions and it'll be great."
Suuuure it will.
Ok, so, the release on Monday is going to be 1.1, and is going to have some important bug fixes in printing, importing, exporting, and searching, and just a smidgeon of new fun features, including the incredibly cool auto-update feature (that you can disable, yes).
Flames to /dev/mike.

Sorry to post this anonymously, but two things:
1) No web export! Wah... I hope there are plans for this to come back??? Soon???
2) I had a much more coherent feedback message about #1 constructed and ready to go... And then your feedback tool decided that the only mail program on a Mac is mail.app. Whee. WRONG. So, you know, you might want to 'genericize' the mail-feeding-toy you use to just mail a straight 'mailto:' widgety thing, or just incorporate your own smtp server within DL (hah, don't do that, my firewall will kill that, too).
Anyway, #1 was kind of "hey, useful feature in older, somewhat-related product, now gone, can it come back soon", but then I couldn't tell you about it, because your feedback toy sucks and doesn't notice that I use thunderbird/entourage/eudora. :P :P :P
I think I will just go to Macworld and figure out if you guys have your heads on straight.
Yeah, I want a web export too! What gives guys?
The fact that everyone wants web export has not gone unnoticed with us. For the time being there are 2 awesome free web-exporting apps you can use.
DeliciWeb: http://homepage.mac.com/imaxinc/DeliciWeb/index.html
DeliciousExporter: http://www.agencesi.com/DeliciousExporter/
I've had problems using the freeware solutions with my .Mac web site (although DeliciWeb is working on it...) so please, please, please take .Mac users into consideration when you develop the web export feature. Thanks. :)
I would be very happy with one tiny addition. You currently give us a box to check for rare. This doesn't really work for me. I need a box for first editions and signed. Most of my book collection is one or the other. This would be much easier for me to track, rather than typing it in comments every time.
any chance of an rss feed for this blog? or does it already exist and i'm just blind?
enjoy MacWorld :)

There is an RSS feed, we just do not have a link on the blog right now.

I'm very surprise and a little confuse to don't see the "Canada" in the country for Amazon. When do you think we will see the support?
One thing I don't understand is why the covers are differents from the Amazon site with this new version 1.1? You get the covers from where?
One BIG thing that missing is the sound format for the DVDs, CDs and games. The best thing, is to be able to choose between any format (DTS, Dolby Digital). Maybe put the format logo in covers down right will be so great. Another kind of music kind will be DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD and HDCD.
Hey guys...
For the next point release (or 2.0, whatever), it would be great if you could take care of the easier bugs to fix, for example the lack of page numbers and edition numbers. Amazon offers that information on the web pages, so I assume it's also available in the XML interface, but DL does not download that info. Especially for textbooks, edition information is crucial!
Also, I posted previously about the insane amount of covers that DL downloads and stores, many of which are for the "Similar" items rather than items we actually have in our library. Since "Similar" items are probably not accessed all that often (and may change!), it would probably be a good idea to download those on-the-fly and NOT store them from session to session. It would save quite a lot of disk space.
Otherwise, a great app that I love using! I would just really love the above things fixed.
Thanks guys! See you at MacWorld!

Ah, one more item... the "Recent Imports" section doesn't seem to EVER get purged. I added my entire collection over a weekend more than a month ago, and so far my ENTIRE collection is still sitting under "Recent Imports."
Is there any way to manually purge "Recent Imports" ? Or perhaps a preference for when it will automatically get purged (e.g. # of weeks, etc.)? Those would be quite useful, because last month's imports are definitely NOT recent!
Thanks!

you said there i a new auto-update feature that can be disabled ?
what gets auto-updated ? DL or the Listings ?
if it's the listings, were can you turn it off ?
i don'1 want to sound pushy as you just placed an upgrade But when will the improved search engine that was promissed in 1.1. appeare now that you changed 1.0.7 to 1.1. and will it be 1.1.1. or 1.2 to make the confusion complete?
One thing that is kind of annoying is that I cannot change the Amazon affiliate link. There are a couple of charities that I usually support through amazon affiliate links, and seeing as though I've already paid you money for the app, I'd rather them get the bonus instead of you.
Other than that (and the previously discussed web export), the app is amazing!
Charity: We decided to donate all our Amazon revenue to charity, so hopefully this won't bug you any more.
Page counts, editions: You might ASSUME that Amazon XML has these since Amazon.com does, but you would, in fact, be wrong. Well, Amazon XML 3.0 does not. 4.0 has page counts at least, so when we release 1.5 you should see page numbers. We have it working in-house and it's pretty cool. There are also some cool 2.0 features we can do when we get page numbers and/or the actual dimensions of books, which XML 4.0 features.
Canada: There is no XML site for Canada, but we're still hoping to support our neighbours to the north better in 1.5.
ROCK! Thank you for the response about the Amazon affiliate links. I think that is a tremendous decision on your part.
Can't wait for the next version... I wonder how it'll work on my new Mac mini... ;-)
Wil: Thanks for the reply. I guess I didn't know that Amazon's XML 3.0 interface was so... lacking. Glad to know that the 4.0 interface at least has SOME more information.
I was actually going to post a "feature request" regarding the book dimensions, because obviously there are plenty of hardcover books that are not all the same size. =) Using the real dimensions to scale the covers to actual units would be highly nifty.
Also a great move regarding the charity, that's excellent. I eagerly await the next versions!
Thanks and see you at MacWorld!
